Job Purpose/Summary

The Staff Accountant will play a key role in supporting the finance department by performing day-to-day accounting functions, ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, and assisting with financial reporting. Working closely under the Senior Accountant, this position requires strong technical accounting skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a mission-driven environment.


The Staff Accountant supports the organization’s financial management by maintaining accurate accounting records, preparing reconciliations, and assisting with monthly and year-end close processes. This position ensures compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and nonprofit accounting standards (FASB ASC 958), with a strong emphasis on fund accounting, grant reporting, and donor-restricted contributions.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Maintain the general ledger, including posting journal entries and ensuring proper coding of transactions.
  • Prepare and review monthly reconciliations of bank accounts, credit cards, and balance sheet accounts.
  • Process accounts payable and accounts receivable, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Assist with grant accounting, including tracking restricted funds, reporting requirements, and compliance.
  • Monitor and reconcile restricted and unrestricted fund activity, ensuring proper allocation of revenues and expenses.
  • Support payroll processing and allocation of labor costs to programs/funding sources.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements and budget-to-actual reports for internal review.
  • Assist with annual audit preparation, including gathering documentation and responding to auditor requests.
  • Assist with monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes, including preparation of financial statements.
  • Help ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and nonprofit-specific accounting standards.
  • Collaborate with program staff to monitor budgets and provide financial guidance.
  • Support process improvement initiatives within the finance department.
  • Support grant accounting by tracking expenditures, preparing budget-to-actual reports, and ensuring compliance with funder requirements.
  • Ensure accuracy and timeliness of accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll entries.



Experience & Qualifications

  • 2–4 years of progressive nonprofit accounting experience 
  • Working knowledge of the U.S. GAAP and FASB standards applicable to nonprofits (ASC 958).
  • Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, MIP Fund Accounting, or similar) and Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, lookups) and Google Workspace.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain financial information clearly.
  • Commitment to confidentiality and ethical handling of sensitive financial information.
  • Experience with grant reporting, fund accounting, and donor-restricted contributions is highly desirable.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
  • CPA, CMA, or equivalent certification preferred; candidates actively pursuing certification will be considered.

  • Interact with CEO, Senior Accountant, Program managers and others in a professional and respectful manner, both verbally and in writing. 
  • Some key skills in this area include active listening, clear verbal/written communication, empathy, cultural humility, conflict resolution, problem-solving, collaboration, time-management, adaptability and adhering to ethical standards such as confidentiality.
Technology Skills
  • Must be able to use a computer or laptop to complete needed tasks for a job.

  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Team-oriented with the ability to work independently.
  • Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks,  MIP Fund Accounting, or similar) and Microsoft Excel.


Position Qualification Preferences
  • Experience working with the American Indian/Alaska Native community.

Work Environment

Physical Demands
The physical demands described are typical of those required by an employee to perform the primary functions of this job successfully. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk frequently, sit, bend, twist, talk, and hear. There are prolonged periods of sitting, keyboarding, reading, as well.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include reading, distance, computer, and color vision. Talking and hearing are essential to communicate with vendors, and staff.

Mental Demands
There are various deadlines associated with this position. The employee must also multi-task and interact with many people on a variety of issues that are, at times, very complicated.

  • Possess and maintain a reliable vehicle with valid CA driver’s license and active auto insurance
  • Available to work evenings and weekends, as needed

Compensation: $34.00 - $39.00 per hour
