Job Purpose/Summary
The Outpatient Therapist is a mental health professional responsible for coordinating and providing therapeutic services to Indigenous individuals, couples, families and/or groups. Their primary role involves assessing, diagnosing, and providing counseling/therapy to eligible clients (children, youth and adults) dealing with various mental health issues, emotional struggles, behavioral problems, or relationship difficulties. The therapist and the client(s) identify the needs and coordinate therapeutic sessions. The outpatient therapist is part of a multidisciplinary treatment team providing services both via telehealth and in person (in the field and/or in the office). Unlicensed therapists must work under the direction of a Licensed Clinical Supervisor.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Conducting comprehensive assessments to understand clients' mental health concerns, history, and needs. This involves using standardized tools, interviews, and observations to formulate diagnoses. Prepare reports, as required.
  • Developing personalized treatment plans tailored to the specific needs of each client. This may involve setting objectives, choosing appropriate therapeutic interventions, and regularly reviewing and modifying the plan as needed.
  • Providing evidence-based therapeutic interventions such as trauma focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT), psychotherapy, family therapy, or other modalities based on the client's needs. Services are provided in person and/or via telehealth (as clinically appropriate) and scheduled to accommodate client availability as much as possible.
  • Addressing immediate crises or emergencies, managing risk assessments, and implementing appropriate interventions to ensure client safety. Provide 24hr availability for crisis intervention, as needed, ensuring that clients receive appropriate support.
  • Maintaining accurate and confidential client records, documenting sessions, progress notes, treatment plans, and any relevant information in compliance with legal and ethical guidelines.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with other providers, community resources, and relevant stakeholders to coordinate comprehensive care and make referrals when necessary.
  • Educating clients and their families about mental health conditions, coping strategies, and resources available to support ongoing mental wellness.
  • Adhering to professional codes of ethics, confidentiality regulations, and legal standards governing mental health practice.
  • Engaging in ongoing professional development, staying updated on therapeutic techniques, research, and best practices in the field of mental health.
  • Advocating for clients' rights, access to resources, and quality mental health care within the community.
  • Participate in staff meetings, team consultations and other meetings, as appropriate and in a professional manner.
  • Comply with agency policies/procedures, including submitting documentation within 24hrs of client session and ensuring that client charts are accurate and up to date.
  • Keep Supervisor informed about cases, clinical challenges, ethical issues and any potential problems.
  • Perform any additional functions in support of Sacred Path Programs, as needed.
  • Conduct in-service training, lead discussion groups and support unlicensed staff, as needed/assigned.*
  • Provide weekly individual and/or group supervision to unlicensed clinicians, as needed, in compliance with California Board of Behavioral Services, Board of Psychology, and Sacred Path guidelines for clinical supervision.*

Experience & Qualifications
  • Minimum one year clinical experience with children and families. (2 years for licensed therapists)
  • Minimum one year of clinical experience working with families experiencing multiple challenges (e.g., poverty, unemployment, homelessness, DCFS involvement).
  • Demonstrated experience providing home and community-based counseling services.

Education
MA in Clinical Psychology, MSW or Ph.D./Psy.D. in Psychology from an accredited graduate program.

License/Certifications
  • Eligible for a California license (e.g., Licensed Psychologist, LMFT, LCSW)
  • Must abide by Sacred Path licensure policy: Post-doctoral level therapists must obtain their license within two years of hire and masters level therapists must obtain their license within three years of hire.
  • Active California license (e.g., Licensed Psychologist, LMFT, LCSW)

Patient Care and Customer Service
  • Deliver exceptional customer service to clients and their families, addressing inquiries, concerns, and complaints in a timely and compassionate manner.
  • Resolve any issues related to patient care or service delivery and escalate matters as necessary.


Communication/Interpersonal Skills
  • Interact with people in a professional and respectful manner, both verbally and in writing. 
  • Some key skills in this area include active listening, clear professional level verbal/written communication,  empathy, compassion, cultural humility, conflict resolution, problem-solving, collaboration, time-management, advocacy, resilience, adaptability and adhering to ethical standards such as confidentiality.

Technology Skills
  • Must be able to have basic computer literacy - be able to use a computer or laptop to complete needed tasks for a job.  
  • Excel, Word, Google email/drive (Sheets, Docs), iPad, electronic health record.
  • Utilize technology tools for virtual sessions, telemedicine, and remote monitoring to ensure continuity of care.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date client records and progress notes within the EHR system; ensuring data accuracy, security, and adherence to privacy regulations to safeguard sensitive client information. 
  • Facilitate virtual support groups and educational workshops using video conferencing platforms.

Position Qualification Preferences
Experience working with the American Indian/Alaska Native community.

Work Environment
The work environment characteristics described here are typical of those an employee will encounter while performing the primary functions of this job. Normal office conditions exist, and the noise level in the work environment can vary from low to moderate.

Physical Demands
The physical demands described are typical of those required by an employee to perform the primary functions of this job successfully. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk and/or drive a car frequently, sit, bend, twist, talk, and hear. There are prolonged periods of sitting, keyboarding, reading, as well.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include reading, driving a vehicle, distance, computer, and color vision. Talking and hearing are essential to communicate with vendors, and staff.

Mental Demands
There are various deadlines associated with this position. The employee must also multi-task and interact with many people with a variety of behavioral, emotional, and mental health issues that are at times, very complicated.
